Was there anything more ubiquitous in the 90s than Delia’s catalogs?
So the year was 1998. Sono Bono dies in a skiing accident. MTV launches a new show called Celebrity Deathmatch. N’Sync releases “I Want You Back.” Elton John is knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” debuts at #1. Eminem is signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records (a year before he releases Slim Shady). Dave Navarro leaves the Red Hot Chili Peppers. All this happens in the first three months of the year!
The 90s were winding down and starting to show the recognizable signs that will soon be identified as the early 2000s. According to census.gov, only 26% of American households had internet access (up from 18% the year before).
And then there was Delia’s—the everpresent mailorder fashion catalog for teen girls. They were EVERYWHERE.
