The 1970s gave us countless timeless hits, but a lot us may not realize that some of their favorites were not the original versions. From rock staples to soulful melodies, here’s a collection of iconic 70s songs that were actually covers.

“Blinded by the Light” – Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (1976)

Originally written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen in 1973, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band gave this song new life, making it a number-one hit in 1976.

“Without You” – Harry Nilsson (1971)

This emotional ballad was originally released by the British band Badfinger in 1970. Nilsson’s 1971 version became internationally famous.

“Black Magic Woman” – Santana (1970)

Santana’s hit was actually first recorded by the original Fleetwood Mac lineup in 1968, showcasing Peter Green’s bluesy style.

“The First Cut Is the Deepest” – Rod Stewart (1976)

Rod Stewart’s hit was written and originally performed by Cat Stevens in 1967.

“Drift Away” – Dobie Gray (1973)

Dobie Gray’s smooth rendition became a classic, but the original was recorded by John Henry Kurtz in 1972 (two months before the John Henry Kurtz version).

“Love Hurts” – Nazareth (1975)

Nazareth made it internationally famous, but the Everly Brothers first recorded it in 1960, influencing multiple covers throughout the 70s. If you’re in mood, you should also check out the Gram Parson version from 1974 where he duets with Emmylou Harris.

“Whiskey in the Jar” – Thin Lizzy (1972)

Thin Lizzy’s rock twist was based on a traditional Irish folk song, with multiple earlier folk renditions. I’ve included a Dubliners version as an example of the Irish folk origins.

“You Light Up My Life” – Debby Boone (1977)

Debby Boone’s signature song was initially recorded by Kasey Cisyk for the soundtrack of the film of the same name earlier in 1977.

“Hurt” – Elvis Presley (1976)

Elvis Presley’s soulful rendition in 1976 followed Timi Yuro’s powerful original released in 1961.
